You will want to read this book!
This fantasy world is well rounded with beautiful descriptive scenery and well written characters that make you want to close your eyes and jump straight into their world. I enjoyed everything about this ya book and can't recommend it enough!

I originally gave this five stars, but I've been thinking it over and while I loved it and loved the African-inspired world, and the all-black cast, I also had a lot of problems (mostly to do with the romance) with it.

The world itself deserves five stars. It was the best world-building I've read this year. Plus, it's given me so much inspiration for my story I'm writing for NaNoWriMo.
It's quite slow-paced too, which I like in a fantasy book, but I know a lot of people don't.

This book was absolutely magical! I loved it! I may be particularly partial to this book solely because of the religion that is affiliated throughout the story. As I am Cuban, we actually follow this same religion (just with slight Spanish variations) so reading about Yoruba, Oya, and Yemaya was just amazing. I've never encountered any of them or the similar beliefs in any stories I've ever read. Now as for the actual story. (view spoiler) This book was absolutely magical! I loved it! I've never encountered any of them or the similar beliefs in any stories I've ever read. Now as for the actual story. (view spoiler)[There are four main characters that bring this entire story to life. Zelie and Tzain are brother and sister. Zelie is gifted, as her mother was, and is a maji. Their mother was brutally murdered during the Raid in which all adult maji were killed because of their connection with the Gods and their magic capabilities. All maji are identified with white hair (like Zelie). Zelie is a bit of a train wreck but with the best intentions and while some of her luck and temper can be irritating at times it also made me absolutely love her character. Tzain is more of the level headed one and always trying to stay below the radar to protect Zelie. Amari and Inan are also brother and sister and Prince and Princess. Their father is responsible for the Raid that killed all the maji including Zelie and Tzain's mother. Inan will do whatever he has to - including maiming Amari- to get his father's approval. Amari just wants to be quiet and left alone. Her best friend Binta is a maji who is her servant at the palace. When the king (their father) finds the magic scroll that can regift magic back to maji, he tests it on Binta. Once she is regifted he murders her unknowingly in front of Amari. Heartbroken and betrayed, Amari steals the scroll and runs away from the palace running into Zelie. As they escape from the kingdom, with Tzain, they get to their home to find that there is a prophecy in action to restore magic. The king sends Inan to retrieve Amari and get the scroll back - killing everyone who stands in the way. The chase and adventure are almost non-stop, action packed and with plenty of secrets. Come to find out that Inan is also a maji and contains some pretty powerful gifts – causing him to fear his father even more. Inan also accidentally kills his father’s lover while attempting to track and learn more about Zelie in a temple. This forces him to go rogue. By the time he catches up to the group, he’s murderous, blaming Zelie for his gifts and in their own fight, Tzain and Amari are captured. While trying to find Tzain, Zelie is also captured and rescued by Inan, who has developed an attraction and love for her. Together they both fight to get their siblings back while Zelie also teaches Inan about his father’s cruelty and the truth of the maji. Inan gets to see it first hand when the kidnappers (who ended up being hidden maji and friendlies) get attacked by his father’s soldiers and completely murdered in cold blood. During the battle some maji release their own powers in self-defense and instead of proving that they are innocent and gentle people, Inan sides with his father on the sheer force of their powers. He ends up betraying Tzain, Amari and Zelie – though conflicted by his newfound love for her. He takes Zelie to his father and the king tortures Zelie by carving “maggot” into her back. He helps to rescue her but doesn’t stay on their side for long. Zelie, Tzain, and Amari fight to keep on their journey to save the maji and team up with some unlikely characters to do so. They end up restoring magic (to what seems to be everyone rather just the gifted maji) but not before Inan commits his most heinous betrayal. He attempts to force Zelie to surrender by holding her father hostage between himself and the king. Even when Zelie surrenders, the king kills her father which in turns hr powers into something even stronger and more connected to the Gods than even she anticipated.
