You will want to read this book!
This fantasy world is well rounded with beautiful descriptive scenery and well written characters that make you want to close your eyes and jump straight into their world. I enjoyed everything about this ya book and can't recommend it enough!

I originally gave this five stars, but I've been thinking it over and while I loved it and loved the African-inspired world, and the all-black cast, I also had a lot of problems (mostly to do with the romance) with it.
The world itself deserves five stars. It was the best world-building I've read this year. Plus, it's given me so much inspiration for my story I'm writing for NaNoWriMo.
It's quite slow-paced too, which I like in a fantasy book, but I know a lot of people don't.
Mild spoilers ahead. ...more

This book was absolutely magical! I loved it! I may be particularly partial to this book solely because of the religion that is affiliated throughout the story. As I am Cuban, we actually follow this same religion (just with slight Spanish variations) so reading about Yoruba, Oya, and Yemaya was just amazing. I've never encountered any of them or the similar beliefs in any stories I've ever read. Now as for the actual story. (view spoiler)
