Excerpt from Carve the Mark
Thank you for joining me for these annotations! It was so much fun to dive back into the Divergent series again. If you’re into arena fights, or romances that grow from mutual respect and understanding, or stories about rebelling against the system, or delightful friend banter, you’ll probably enjoy the Carve the Mark series, too. There are exclusive alternate scenes for Carve the Mark here as a bonus: Happy reading!

Would I even be strong enough to hold on to her? Would it be worth my effort to try to help her if I know I’m too weak to do any good? I know what those questions are: excuses. Human reason can excuse any evil; that is why it’s so important that we don’t rely on it. My father’s words.
There is an early version of Divergent in which Tris gets slowly warped by the darker side of Dauntless, to the point where she doesn’t even want to help her friends anymore. I think this part—where Tris thinks about not helping Christina—is a remnant of that draft. I changed it because ultimately, that struggle just wasn’t what the book was about. This adjusted version works for me because Tris is examining the reasons a person might not act—they’re insecure about their capacity to help! They don’t know what to do!—and ultimately decides she has to try, thanks to her father’s words. This, I ...more

My father says that those who want power and get it live in terror of losing it. That’s why we have to give power to those who do not want it.
I wrote Divergent when I was 22 years old, so it’s interesting to go back to lines like these, that reveal my beliefs about the world then, and see to what extent I still agree with them (if at all). With this one, I feel like my belief has only gotten stronger as I’ve seen the lengths to which people will go to keep their power, or increase it. My new antagonist—Ryzek, the tyrannical leader in Carve the Mark—takes this whole concept even further. Ryzek’s weakness is his fear—his fear of letting down his father, and losing his power, sure, but also his fear of pain. He is the anti-Tris—selfish ...more
