Written in 1899, a sailor on the Thames tells his fellow passengers about his trip up river in the Congo as captain of a steam ship. The story is more about Kurtz than the narrator himself, a larger-than-life figure living in a remote jungle camp bringing in more ivory than all the other stations together.
