What Members Thought

This is one of those novels that lingers with you long after you've put it down. It is thought-provoking, touches your heart, and amazes you with it's masterful, creative writing. In general, I like the story of this novel more than the manner in which Ruth Ozeki chose to execute it. Had A Tale for the Time Being been a story about a Japanese girl dealing with feelings of displacement and school bullies and family dysfunction, I can easily see myself have really enjoying it. But the author added a more “literary” framework that did nothing for me, dragged the story down, or was just beyond me. After a long time I've read a book that was unputdownable as it neared the half way mark! What a ride! Feels like I've just been to Japan and British Columbia. But hey, don't read it if you don't have an open mind. Like Murakami level open mind. ;-)
