What Members Thought

This is one of those novels that lingers with you long after you've put it down. It is thought-provoking, touches your heart, and amazes you with it's masterful, creative writing. This five-star book is the best I've read this year, and has earned a place on my list of all-time favorites. Here's the jacket description of A Tale for the Time Being:

My review in 2014: "Like some other reviewers, I really enjoyed this novel and found myself very involved with both main characters (and I almost never read novels) until the dream sequence towards the end. I wish author Ozeki had found another way to successfully round off her tale. Supernatural interventions are not to my taste and are best left for childrens' literature. I've just abandoned reading Alice Hoffman's The Ice Queen for the same reason."

In general, I like the story of this novel more than the manner in which Ruth Ozeki chose to execute it. Had A Tale for the Time Being been a story about a Japanese girl dealing with feelings of displacement and school bullies and family dysfunction, I can easily see myself have really enjoying it. But the author added a more “literary” framework that did nothing for me, dragged the story down, or was just beyond me.
