What Members Thought
Brutal and disturbing. Much like the war, surprise surprise. This is one of those put-your-heart-through-the-wringer books that's meaningful, but not at all enjoyable to read. Two aspects of it appealed to me: the fact that my grandmother lived through the Nazi occupation in Belgium and experienced this hardship (but to a much lesser degree), and the fact that this book aspires to celebrate unsung female heroes of the war. 3.6 - In the end the book worked for me ( and its why i give it 4 stars) but there was something simplistic about the setting of the story.
it could be because i read this year , a woman of no importance about the real life events in occupied France or because just before it i read half a yellow sun which told a story of another war but developed the story in such a better way , that i judge this book harshly .
its not a bad read at all but you can see the paintbrush strokes in the background.

I listened to audiobook. The setting is occupied France in World War II and the lives of two sisters and their family. It was very tragic. Once again, I am amazed at human strength in adversity. It was very hard to listen to.
Wonderful book. I usually don’t care for war stories but couldn’t put this one down
