Shelves: classic-literature, 1001-books-to-read-before-you-die

I've read this novel several times and decided to now come back and review it. Simply for the purposes of adding this book to my 'have reviewed' imaginary list.

I doubt few people have no clue of the plot of Treasure Island. The tale of Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver has been practically immortalised through various films. All I should say is that if you haven't read this and only seen the films around you should come back and read this.

Oh, Long John Silver is the quintessential pirate isn't he?! I *loved* the way that Robert Louis Stevenson drew this character, and he has to be one of the greatest characters in literature, period. Alternately deceitful, honest, terrifying, charming, loyal, disloyal, selfish, selfless, good, and evil, Stevenson's John Silver is the chameleon that I would think a pirate would have to be in order to survive, let alone in order to conquer. I really had a good time with this. It sure helped that I am familiar with a dew of the adaptations so the charicatures were so clear to me. But interesting to see the dramatic license taken in some plot points. A little bit more gruesome and violent in the book.
