4.0 to 4.5 stars. Having not read this book as a child and thinking that I had probably "outgrown" the story as an adult, it took me along time to get around to reading this book which has been part of my Easton Press library for years. All I can say is...WOW, was a missing something special. This was a fantastic tale, superbly written with amazing characters (Long John Silver was just amazing) and a plot that never let up or lost any steam. I was sooooo young yet the pirates and the treasure didn't move me as they might have. Loved the sword play...but not so much the story. LJS was not to be trusted...why couldn't he see that? Likeable yes, but not to be trusted. ...more

The oddest thing about this book [not counting the number of times that Jim Hawkins announces he's about to do something stupid, then charges ahead, assuring us it will all come out right] is that the only interesting character is Long John Silver. The rest are stereotypes, stock figures or plain dull. Silver on the other hand, an anti-hero for generations, should have his own series. ...more
