This book is my first read of a Trollope novel, and it captured me on many different levels, which led to Trollope catapulting to the top of my Victorian author list.
Like Hardy, I see Trollope as a cool Victorian writer. This novel really did not really turn out as I had hoped at all. I have loved the other Trollope novels I have read, so I was hopefully that it would really affect me more.
Those who have read both this and Dickens' Little Dorrit will see the reason I might compare the two. I was even looking forward to some enjoyable comparison between those, and ultimately, I don't even have the interest to do that. I'm rounding this up to four stars; it was something of a letdown for a book considered Trollope's masterpiece. The best of it was the wealth of interesting, credible and realized characters; however, ideally the plots would have been better integrated (and where they were, it strained credulity -- the Mrs. Hurtle/Ruby Ruggles overlap, e.g.) and observations were frequently repeated and in almost identical language.
