I liked this better than The Big Sleep, but not by much. I could see how Chandler's Philip Marlowe's character influenced so many authors. I don't think Raymond Chandler is for me. I think there is one other for the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die challenge.

I'm trying to remember which Raymond Chandler novel it is with my favorite Chandler line, "He was as inconspicuous as a tarantula on a slice of angel food cake." I'm pretty sure it was this one, but it may have been The Big Sleep.

Read it for a continuing ed class I'm taking about the detective fiction genre. I love Marlowe and a lot of the other characters and bits in this book, but something didn't sit right with me about the story overall--the two "mysteries" to solve didn't seem to naturally hang together and a couple of the plot elements felt a little superfluous. I still really enjoyed it though.

Not quite as grittily realistic as other Marlowe adventures, but the way he ties all the threads together is great stuff and the supporting cast is stellar.
