I would not have read this book if it had not been mentioned in Jim C. Hines's Revisionary. I'm glad it was. This was a fun, creative story that kids who like fantasy would certainly enjoy. I liked that it had had strong, female character and an exciting adventure for her to go on. FYI, the answer is forty-four. That machine was off by two. A solid middle-grade book, I guess. A few technical things annoyed me (too many exclamation marks in the beginning, repetitive explanations/parts that were too tell-y vs. showy) but that's probably how middle-grade books are, especially when told in first person--it's been a while since I've read them.
Overall, the story was a fun read; in fact, at some point, I got that delicious feeling where I was compelled to keep going despite how late it was getting.
