This epistolary picture book may not engage very young readers, but an elementary school aged reader may be interested in the historical period and Lydia Grace's efforts to use gardens to brighten difficult circumstances. A good companion book to Miss Rumphius, The Secret Garden, or Seedfolks.

Lydia Grace Finch is sent to the city when times are hard to stay with her uncle. She works in his bakery and grows flowers everywhere she can, creating a secret rooftop garden while writing letters home. Lovely illustrations and story.
