I really enjoyed this book. It's a murder mystery set during the gold rush in New Zealand. What's unique about the book is that Catton layers the zodiac over the story, assigning astrological signs to multiple characters who take on the personality characteristics of the specific sign to which Catton has assigned them. A very well-constructed whodunnit and an interesting vivid impression of New Zealand during the 19th century - but sorry, it's way too long. By the time the author gets to unravelling the background of the lead characters and thus the solution of the crime, I just didn't have the patience anymore to read with full attention and skipped through it. The first part especially could have been (should have been?) much shorter.

I very much liked the writing style and the setting, but after reading 15% of the book, I still wasn't compelled by the story or the characters. I'll give it another shot later.
