Man I wanted to love this book so much! Aaaand it just didn't happen. I thought it was like a very capably written Dickens novel, even tighter. I just didn't care about what happened. I liked the chapter synopses, and I thought it was kind of cool how they changed towards the end. Oh and was all the astrological stuff supposed to mean something? Like did they correspond to things? The Luminaries is a long, dense work of historical fiction full of interesting characters involved in unraveling a murder mystery. As others have mentioned, the book follows a mathematical structure that apparently has something to do with the moon and stars and results in super long chapters at the beginning of the book and concludes with half page chapters. I very much liked the writing style and the setting, but after reading 15% of the book, I still wasn't compelled by the story or the characters. I'll give it another shot later.
