I remember loving this book as a girl. It was mysterious and full of delicious and erudite details. I was in the mood to reread a favorite middle grade novel, and had apparently previously given it five stars. I'd rate it three stars now, but I'm leaving one additional star for nostalgia purposes.

Like the gamers say at the end of the story: "And it's just awful when you go back to something that was so great the way you remembered it, and it's no good anymore. It even ruins remembering. ...more

Shelves: ancients, mystery, imagination, egyptian-gods, fiction, egypt

I read this aloud to my 10 and 6 year old and they really enjoyed it. They thought it was interesting and suspenseful, and they longed for an opportunity to visit "Egypt" to play the Egypt Game with their friends. I am giving it 4-stars because my kids like it so much. My personal rating would probably be closer to 3 or 3.5 stars. ...more

Shelves: america, children, newbery, culture, puzzle, middle-grade

A cute book, but not as engaging as The Westing Game, for example. It lacks of clever mystery and puzzle that actually can be slipped inside the story. I like the diverse characters though and pretty impressed by them, especially because this book is written in the 60s. I also love the Egyptian things that become their obsession in this book. And more or less, Egypt Game reminds me of my carefree, imaginative childhood days.
