The word is that Fitzgerald hurried through the writing of this book so the he could be paid for it and show Zelda's family that he was worthy of marrying her. It's Fitzgerald's first work, and it is hard to believe that he was only 23 when he wrote it. Although the book is disjointed and messily written, I thought that it was a great read. Much of it is supposed to be autobiographical, which if true, shows the inner turmoil and ennui that Fitzgerald was already suffering at a young age.
