The series goes back to fill in a gap from the first book The Beekeepers Apprentice. It's the end of 1918 and Holmes and Mary Russell have been forced to take leave of England. Given several choices of places where Mycroft has assignments Russell chooses Palestine to travel to. there they meet up with Mahmoud and Ali and start traveling the country as Bedouins.
