I’ve known about this book for a long time. But I never paid much attention to it. Until I impulsively picked it up the last time I was at the library. And. Oh my goodness! I’m kicking myself for not reading this way sooner! I freaking loved this book! It ticked all of my boxes and then some. A positively swoon worthy male lead who is one of the dreamiest YA boys I’ve ever read? Check! A thoroughly likable female lead with grit, brains and courage? Check. A seriously cool fantasy idea? Check. We I’ve known about this book for a long time. But I never paid much attention to it. Until I impulsively picked it up the last time I was at the library. And. Oh my goodness! I’m kicking myself for not reading this way sooner! I freaking loved this book! It ticked all of my boxes and then some. A positively swoon worthy male lead who is one of the dreamiest YA boys I’ve ever read? Check! A thoroughly likable female lead with grit, brains and courage? Check. A seriously cool fantasy idea? Check. Well written? Check. A lushly detailed setting? Check.
I’m not sure where to start. So I think I’ll start with the characters. Ren. Oh child. Ren. He is. Just. Mmm. I have read many, many, many boys, both YA and not, and Ren stands out as one of the absolute best I have ever read. He is a dreamboat. He is gorgeous, charming, kind, polite, brave, chivalrous, intelligent, thoughtful, articulate, caring, considerate. He’s basically perfection. In case you haven’t figured it out, I loved him!
And Kelsey was no slouch either. She’s brave, plucky, intelligent, kind, caring and never once had a too stupid to live moment. She knew when she was out of her depth or whatnot and wasn’t afraid to admit it or ask for help when needed. She was very likable and easy to root for.
And though it’s only in the beginning stages here, I liked their romance a lot and I think that they’ll make a great pair!
In some ways this reminded me of Rick Riordan’s books. Except if Percy and pals had been older from the onset and gods didn’t have mortal kids. I really enjoyed Colleen’s take on Hindu myths and legends and deities and how they might come into play in our world. And I appreciated learning more about Hinduism. I adored the India setting. Colleen brought it so richly and vividly to life and I could really picture it in my mind. The fantasy itself is so well written and plotted and I really, really enjoyed it. I had a very hard time putting this book down and I lost sleep to it! It’s that good.
All in all, this is a superb series starter and one that I definitely recommend. ...more

As far as YA books go, I do think that this is a good book. I felt like I was reading a script rather than a novel, but I do think that I enjoyed it more than I did the Twilight series.

The idea for the story is a good idea, and it's an enjoyable story. I really think that as the author grows more, we'll be seeing some strong books in the future. ...more
