If I had decided as a kid to run away to live in the woods, I'd be back home before nightfall. Lucky for me I can "run away in a book" and see what it would be like to live in the woods for the night, the week, the month, the winter, the year. I enjoyed following Sam on his quest to learn to live off the land. This is a great read for young adventurers who love nature.

One of the few books that haunted me through to my adult years. (A kid can run away and live in the wilderness his/herself? I'm in!) Re-reading it was fun, although I have very little patience for Thoreau (and Thoreau lovers) today.
