Karana lives on the small island of the blue dolphins with her older sister, younger brother and father. Aleuts along with a Russian come to the island to kill sea otters. They try to stiff Karana's tribe and most of the men from her tribe are killed in the ensuing fight. The new chief heads east to find a new home for the tribe.
