I read my brother's old copy of this - he 'did' it for literature at lower secondary. Reading it - and knowing this - made me think of I Heard the Owl Call My Name, which I myself studied for literature at the age of 13, and I started wondering if Singaporean schools/teachers used to be under some odd imperative to push aboriginal/native literature at school-children? Is this a more subtle way of understanding our own country as a former colony? I did progress to Cry, the Beloved Country and Mal

We read this for Mom-Dot book club. I hadn't read it since I was a kid. Surprisingly, or maybe not surprisingly, a lot of the book had stuck with me. It was fun rereading it as an adult but much more enjoyable seeing the book through my daughter's eyes.

I know that I read this as a kid, but I don't really remember liking it that much then. I liked it better this time.
