A young mother leaves her baby on someone's doorstep, and this book is primarily about the people who take the baby in. This is one of my all time top 10 or 15 reads. She writes very beautifully - lots of her novels are good, but I think this is her best.

A fast, lovely, heartwarming read. Quindlen has a journalist's eye and captures small-town America in brilliant, spot-on detail. The characters are all believable and compelling. I especially liked Nadine, the grumpy Korean housekeeper with a mysterious scar on her face. Clearly, the scar represents her traumatic past which she won't talk about, but is impossible to fully escape, erase, or ignore. The ending wasn't happy Hollywood. Instead it was believable. Sweet story about an elderly woman and a young man who forge a friendship under interesting circumstances.
I like Quindlen's writing, which sometimes is quite subtle, and her stories, too. They aren't epic by any stretch, but they are engaging, and they customarily feature compelling women at their center.
I would recommend this light, easy read to Quindlen fans. For those starting off with her, I would begin with Everyone Last One. ...more

I thought I've read more of Anna Quindlen but it doesn't look like it. I like her bobvoks...slow thoughtful stories of people, relationships and emotions.
