A definite departure from Christie's more famous series work, but intriguing in its own way as she plays with the conventions of the gothic novel. While the attentive reader will likely anticipate where she's going with all of this, it's well-executed. ...more

A stand-alone book by Agatha Christie. A quite different type of book.

Lower class, somewhat drifter, Michael Rogers marries wealthy heiress Ellie Guteman. They build their dream home on land that is supposed to be cursed. Anything else I write would be a spoiler.

The title comes from William Blake's Auguries of Innocence:

"Every night and every morn,
Some to misery are born,
Every morn and every night,
Some are born to sweet delight.
Some are born to sweet delight,
Some are born to endless night."

Rereading this for #ReadChristie2023. I forgot how ahead of its time this book is, introducing us to one of the earlier iconic unreliable narrator.

This is one of the more psychologically heavy theme of Agatha's work, and probably one of the most chilling.
