What Members Thought

I thought I would like this a whole lot more. I guess I didn't realise how much Konigsburg likes art, so much so she uses some of her books as 'teaching' vehicles for various aspects of the discipline (The Mysterious Edge of the Heroic World and The Second Mrs. Gioconda; this one is on authenticity and secrets); the other reason for my somewhat lukewarm response is the stilted narration, complicated by Mrs Frankweiler's first-person voice (but her absence in the first part of the book).

Come on guys! Who didn't love that book? Life in the Met was good, and not a bit creepy. Prepared us all to be runaways.

I probably read this as a kid, but I didn't really remember it, so I read it again. A good read.

From the pages of From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler:
As they were walking up the steps, Jamie spied a Hershey's almond bar still in its wrapper lying in the corner of the landing. He picked it up and tore open one corner.
"Was it bitten into?" asked Claudia.
"No," Jamie smiled. "Want half?"
"You better not touch it," Claudia warned. "It's probably poisoned or filled with marijuana, so you'll eat it and become either dead or a dope addict."

Rereading this book, this time the English version. Still love it, full of the same mystery, adventure, bossy big sister and hilarious younger brother. I love the description of New York City and the Metropolitan Museum in the 70s. And although I think Claudia is a bit selfish, I can relate to her situation pretty well.

One of my absolute favorite books as a young teen. I would've *loved* to secretly spend the night in a history museum. Back then anyway---now I'm too afraid the ghost of Mary Todd Lincoln would come to get me!
