I just re-read this on my recent vacation and surprisingly, the quality of the writing itself holds up. I see this is as disturbing - but brilliant - transgressive art. The writing is solid, the character of Patrick Bateman at the very least memorable, and some of the setpieces here incredibly funny. This is a novel of great satire and literary precision. I found myself laughing out loud repeatedly while reading it again.

It's easy to see why this book was groundbreaking when it was originally published, and also just how many writers have tried (with varying degrees of success) to rip Ellis off since. Not for the faint of heart or stomach, but the unsettling feeling you get reading extends way beyond the violence - the true terror here is the basic level of human obliviousness to what really lives in other people's minds.
