my two star rating is because it seemed to take me a long time to finish this book. I found myself frustrated with the author for the decisions that she continued to make and then her whining about them. this would make me put the book down. I could not seem to find a place of understanding based on the information given concerning her childhood. too often I was unwilling to really care. Interesting read for anyone in the food business, but it is much more than just a story of how this successful chef-owner of a restaurant in Manhattan got there. After I read this I also read (or at least browsed through) the author's cookbook and it is an excellent companion volume. I'd recommend this book to anyone who thinks they want to make their living cooking.

Not for everyone, but I like hearing this author's adventures on the road to sel-sufficiency and a career in the food industry. She made major mistakes in ways I cannot imagine, but she learned from them and moved on. She tells it like it was in this memoir without sugar-coating things to appear to be the hero.

While Hamilton's interpersonal relationships are somewhat odd even by chef standards, her affection for simple, delicious food comes through strongly and she can turn a nice phrase. That said, it lacks the level of self-reflection that turns memoirs from good to great.
