As a fervent (FERVENT) Buffy fan, I was prepared to not like this book, and, well, it didn't disappoint me in that respect. This was really jumbled, as if the author had written a series of short stories years ago, and then spent about an hour tying them all together. And there was no sex! I was promised sex - that at least would have made up for the jumbled style ;-) ...more

The story was a little dark for my tastes. In my world, evil is not lurking in every shadow. Then again, in my world vampires don't exist either.

I like Anita Blake because her character has depth and conflict. She tries to do the right thing, but admits that she is terrified of vampires and would rather be safe at home then be a big, bad slayer. While Hamilton makes the vampires (and the world) a little too inherently evil, she does allow for choice.

Anita Blake is an animator who raises zombies. She also works for the police as a consultant and is helping them try to solve a series of vampire murders. The head vampire in town coerces Anita into working for her to solve the murders. I like the character of Anita and thought the solution to the mystery was good. I look forward to reading more of this series.

this is the first book in this series. the characters are a little underdeveloped, but it is the first book. the ideas are good, and overall it is an entertaining book. it is a good start of a series, but unfortunatelly, only the first 7 books are worth reading.

Certainly not a top pick for the cozy-loving crowd, but the dark comic attitude and fully-developed alternate world make for a winner in my eyes.
