Maybe it is because I read this right after Madame Bovary that I don't quite like The Awakening. Because the two novels are similar with character types and themes, I found myself filling in Chopin's gaps with Flaubert's details to understand moments such as Robert's sudden leave to Mexico, like Léon's leave to Paris. Didn't like the prose style, found it hard to maintain interest until page 80, and I felt empty at the end, but relieved to finish my experience with this story. ...more
