What Members Thought
The writing is truly beautiful, and I was really struck by how genuine the voice is, as a woman writing a man. Also, for such a religious piece of work, it works as how religion should be, and not preachy at all.
My only complaint is to the storyline: as a letter to his son I thought it should have more about him, about his father, about his grandfather. When he talks of the life he has and the generations before him I felt it very vague and only worked to give an idea of the men, but stopped sh ...more

Clean, simple and lovely. I'll admit I'm still trying to figure out why it won the Pulitzer. Not that it isn't worthy of it, but I think I may need to reread it to 'get' it.
The novel is refreshing in its purity, both in content and style. Its pace is slow, somewhat tangential in its reminiscing - and always reflective and insightful. Perfectly styled for an aging narrator.

A lovely, moving book about looking back at one's life through a lens of faith. I'm usually allergic to books that harbor so much Christian thought, but this was exquisitely done.
