The modern "I live on coffee, I chain smoke, I ponder my messed up personal life, and occasionally do a little murder solving, a murder that is extremely brutal and unnecessarily described in detail, because let's shock people a bit" thrillers/detective stories aren't my favorite thing in the world to spend my time with. Agatha Christies are addictive and Raymond Chandlers are perfect for an atmospheric evening, but a pile of Henning Mankells and Stieg Larssons have been abandoned within the fir ...more

I let my head drop onto the steering wheel. How wonderful to have such an authentic human experience. Now I knew what it was like to feel like a total idiot.

2.5 stars - This was a lot of fun but I wished parts of it were more streamlined.

I've seen the first few seasons of this show, and I liked it okay, but I never sought out the book even after I learned it was based on a book, because it just seemed like the sort of story that would not be better in book form. I was wrong. This is so enjoy

I know this is fantasy and that Dexter is essentially a good guy, but I find the whole premise of this series not at all to my taste.

TITLE/AUTHOR: DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER by Jeff Lindsay
RATING: 4.5/B+
GENRE/PUB DATE/# OF PAGES: Mystery, 2004, 288 pgs
TIME/PLACE: Present, Miami, FL
CHARACTERS: Dexter/blood spatter expert & serial killer
COMMENTS: Dexter is a very unqiue serial killer, a likeable one! He only kills the bad guys, those who deserve it. Dexter is assisting his foster-sister, Deborah in finding a serial killer. The crime scenes are strangely familar and look very much like something Dexter may have done. Gr

While it's easy to heap praise on this one for inverting the typical serial killer formula, what really makes this one work is Lindsay's ability to walk the incredibly fine line between making Dexter likable while not letting you forget that he's a sociopath. It takes great skill as a writer to keep a premise like this from wandering into glamorizing a killer or softening a bad guy to the point that he's not bad anymore. It'll be interesting to see if he can maintain it in further entries in the ...more

This first book in the series pretty much mirrors Season 1 of the show throughout the first 3/4s. The storyline is about a serial killer who kills serial killers. I found Dexter to be quite an interesting fellow, but it's pretty gory for those of you who don't care for a heavy dose of violence. I'll likely check out more books in this series down the road, since I'm interested to see how the relationships in the book will continue. ...more
