Anna Quindlen is one of my favorite non-fiction authors and this is the first book of fiction I have read of hers. It is a fast read and I really related to the main character. I have never been beaten up before by a man but I have been in abusive relationships and could understand her psyche. A different look at the battered wife syndrome, with a bittersweet ending.
This book is about an abused wife. It's well-written, but the author fails to offer any new insight into the psychology of couples who are and stay in these types of relationships. The twist is that the abuser is a cop, which adds another layer of complexity, but overall, the book is no better than others that have covered this topic in a fictionalized manner.

Excellent! Quindlent really gave you insight into how difficult it is to Just Leave an abusive relationship. Fran leaves w/ her son Robert & has to assume a new identity, Beth. New state, new job, and have to let go of everything old including family. Very tough. Very emotional book.
