I think that Smith is an outstanding writer. He can set a tone and give his characters words that evoke an incredible amount of emotion in me. Each time I pick up one of his books, I can immediately tell upon starting it that I won't be disappointed.

Not a mystery in the same way as Smith's other work in this series, but fascinating in a different way as it explores the USSR's inner rot and foreign misadventures during the Cold War. At times violent and brutal, but in a way that's necessary to tell the tale.
