I first read this book when I was in the 9th Grade and have lost count of the number of times I have since read it . It is amazing how one can love a character so dislikeable. Scarlett is such a brat but she's right up there with Jo March as one of my favorite book characters. ...more

I am so glad I finally decided to reread this book. I read it when I was around 11 or 12, and I did not come near grasping the depth and complexity of the story.

First of, I really enjoyed the portrayal of the pre-Civil War South. I appreciated the slave stories that are not told from the perspective of the "winners"/Yankees, which is what the current history books teach. The devastation of the region/reconstruction after the war was also very enlightening to read about.

This one is also a high school read and I feel kind of guilty for liking it as much as I do. As one may be able to tell from the other books I have read, I am a firm believer in the fact that whites were not in fact victims during Reconstruction which is sort of what Margaret Mitchell makes Scarlett O'Hara out to be. I was suprised at how much I loved this book! There is some language and attitudes that are difficult for me to swallow esp regarding slavery and African Americans, but if you can place it in a historical context one can get through it. I loved Scarlett's strength and I appreciated the emotional honesty of many of the characters who are flawed just as all of us are. ...more
