So glad to have read this book, recommended by Christopher H. and discussed in our Jane Austen group. I will post a short review soon, but will say now that it is certainly a great piece of historical fiction and almost escapist with O'Brian's keen descriptions of naval life circa 1800. Additionally, there is such an atmosphere of real life, real conversation, and real interaction among people. ...more

I thought this was just so-so, just OK. It had some good parts that were more engaging, but I found a lot of it rather boring and it sometimes seemed to move at a snail's pace. ...more
