Beautifully written gothic and feminist stories based on famous fairytales. They're like more developed and flowery versions of the originals, a world I'd love to be sucked into. On a closer look you notice they all study womanhood, taking the opening short story away from the "handsome prince rescues the helpless girl" - scenario. ...more

I don't know if I can ever be a fan of Angela Carter, no matter how good a writer I can tell she is. Her prose is just too voluptuous for me - reading each short story is like downing a slice of double-stacked chocolate cake with a scoop of chocolate ice-cream really quickly (OK, I'll admit I rushed through them a bit too, to finish the book before I left for the airport - obsessive, I know!)... well, only at the end of each rich little dessert, you get a little bit of acid reflux from the unexp ...more
