Written in the immediate aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, this short novel is a feverish commentary of the hollowness of the so-called "superpower" of the USSR. The titular narrator is an unremarkable schoolboy who is selected to try out for the cosmonaut training program in the early 1970s. As he goes through the program, he encounters increasing absurdity and increasingly bizarre bosses (including one wheelchair-bound officer who might be serving as homage to Dr. Strangelove). ...more
