What Members Thought

The writing in this book is superb. The marking of a great book is when the author is able to make the reader feel like one or more of the characters. I felt that way when I read the Age of Innocence, and I felt that way when I read this book. The suburban angst that exists among the characters in the novel made me uncomfortable when reading this book. No one is happy with their lives, and the tragic ending makes this a depressing read, even though the writing is fantastic.

Oh piercing suburban loneliness, lovely young couple teetering on the edge of self-annihilation, parent-less bright young things, golden handcuffs offered in the dankness of a paper-pushing job... Yates writes beautiful sentences. Sentences that remind us how beautiful certain words strung together can become. It's worth reading just for that.

people who like really real realism really really like this novel. it's not my kind of novel, but i recognized that it was extremely well done.
