The writing in this book is superb. The marking of a great book is when the author is able to make the reader feel like one or more of the characters. I felt that way when I read the Age of Innocence, and I felt that way when I read this book. The suburban angst that exists among the characters in the novel made me uncomfortable when reading this book. No one is happy with their lives, and the tragic ending makes this a depressing read, even though the writing is fantastic.

Oh piercing suburban loneliness, lovely young couple teetering on the edge of self-annihilation, parent-less bright young things, golden handcuffs offered in the dankness of a paper-pushing job... I love this book - but am not sure if it's because of the movie, which I'd seen some years ago (even if the critics don't agree on its value).
