How do you rate a book that you slogged through for two hundred and fifty pages, wanting to quit, hating the sappiness of the love story, cringing at the thou-thine-ye vocabulary of the characters' conversations...and then, completely unexpectedly, falling in love with the text for the last two hundred pages, flipping pages like you are reading a bestseller, fascinated with the descriptions of Nero's Rome, awestruck at the sacrifice and love the characters show for abominable people?

This book is quite personal so I don't think it will be a 4-star for everyone. I just think that the story about Nero, St Peter and St Paul here is very inspiring and pretty much stick to the Bible. I like any historical fiction based on the Bible stories, but this one so far is the most accurate- even though it still has some drama and romance that are of course fictional, but I can tolerate them, mainly because I love the protagonists especially Petronius- the antihero, no nonsense Roman guy.

I heard many good things about this novel, also about some of the movies made using the book, but I was still impressed in a good way by it. I liked the drama of the two lovers, same as the tragedy of the early Christians. I also took it as opportunity to take a glimpse into 1st century Rome. That mighty Rome that ruled most of the known world with all the aspects of a modern metropola. For all these reasons and many others I believe this to be one of the best novels I read recently.
