The writing is too stark and laconic for my taste. It does have this hopeless and oppressing atmosphere (especially when you know that someday the world will look like this) but it's also horribly monotonic. At times it feels like some horrendous list and doesn't give the reader any chance to connect with the characters at an emotional level. ...more

The real "Walking Dead"...

Makes you realize the unrealized horror of an apocalyptic event is what comes after. You want to carry the fire, but how long can you keep carrying it...what are you prepared to witness?

I know that CM is supposedly working on something new, but if this was his final book, I'd be just fine with that.

I'd always avoided this author, because I don't like westerns or anything describing horses, but since I knew he was supposed to be a great writer, I figured this would be the one to read by him. I liked it a lot, but wasn't sure where all the hype came from. I do think I will check out other titles by him though. ...more

I finished this book a few weeks ago, and I already forget my feelings about it. I enjoyed it while I was reading it, but I guess it was fairly forgettable.

This is the scariest book I have read in a long time. The picture of desperation and post-apocalyptic disaster is gut wrenching and horrifing. The scariest part being that you begin to believe that this could be our future, with wars, fires, hurricanes, etc. all leading up to this type of survival of the fittest society.

Not sure I can rate this one. Amazing, a clarion call. But I found McCarthy annoying and full of himself, as I usually do. Would/could the end of the world be that horrible? That many people willing to forsake anything that makes them human?

Really want to give 4 stars but the depressing tone was too dark. Very detail and a bit slow, yet very very haunting. i think i'm gonna go see the movie version. ...more

This is grueling to read, but it was fantastic in the way that it made me think--it stayed with me.
