This classic is an excellent read. It's about a young girl who gets caught up in life in the big city. It's a sad, tragic tale, but Drieser provides an excellent commentary on the urbanization of America.

I really enjoyed the portraits of Chicago and New York as they were in the late 1890s. As for the tale of Carrie herself, even though you know she was going to learn Big City Lessons the hard way, I was relieved that her progression wasn't like "The Jungle," where the protagonist goes from frying pan to fire to hell to 5th circle of hell. I did find it a little odd that so much attention was given to the character of Hurstwood--so much so that it almost wasn't a book about Carrie after all. Perh
