I wonder why people don't read this much. It's perfect for everyone. It's got hunting, fishing, farming, fighting, wrestling, witches, adventure, misadventure, villans, robbers, sucking mud pits, inpentetrable fog, mystery, chivalry, dasterdliness, history, eloquence, musicality, loyalty, fair maidens in distress, dashing heros, suspense, and romantic love. Lorna Doone is a rollicking good adventure story, set in the late 1600s in rural England. It was actually written in 1869, so an historical fiction at that time, although it’s billed as a romance. And it’s very romantic, in the more classic sense of the word. It was one of the most popular novels of its time and I’m not sure why it hasn’t retained as much popularity in the classics world as the works of some of Blackmore’s contemporaries.

This is a true classic historical novel. Written by Victorian author R. D. Blackmore, it was set during and immediately after the reign of Charles II of England. It is a story of rural Somerset and Devonshire, narrated by John Ridd, farmer and unofficial leader of the surrounding community.
