in 2015 I read the book Barren Lives by Graciliano Ramos, which takes place in Northeastern Brazil, or the Backlands, where it's inhabitants often struggle to survive during drought and poverty. They are often taken advantage of because many are illiterate. Lispector's main character, Macabea is from the Backlands, and ends up in the slums of Rio.

I really want to like CL, but I don't. I think maybe it's because I keep expecting something borgesian, and then her writing turns out to be more dosteyevskian. I'll keep trying.
