It's hard to understand how I stuck with this book to the end. Sarcasm and cynicism ooze from every page. Celine was a misanthropic nihilist and this is evident in his work. In fact, at the time it was written, this book could never have been published in North America or probably England, because we're just so bloody moral, and the book deals with earthy and mature topics and has some "bad" language.

I first heard about Celine from Henry Miller. Reading Celine made me realized just how much Miller was influenced by him -- topic matter, style, language, and tone. The big difference between the two for me was the general attitude. Celine took a much darker view than Miller. Miller always felt more mystical and carefree. Celine was all grime, dirt, and death. Darkly funny, but dark.
