This was really a pretty cool book. If you're at all interested in psychology, I would recommend reading it. The protagonist, Paul Morel, is the victim of a strong Oedipus complex - having never had a healthy father figure to identify with, Paul latches onto his mother in both a familial and a romantic way. The feelings of romantic love that Paul has for his mother are very subtle and never come to conscious thought or action. Because of Paul's attachment to his mother, he has difficulty finding
