I'll probably revise this later but for now, I will just say that the back cover of my edition of this book calls it "The Strangest Love Story Ever Told" and I have to concur. It is weird, creepy and frankly, not really a love story. It is more of a ghost story, or a tale of revenge and how it can destroy a person's soul. 2.5 stars really. I struggled to finish this one. I didn't like the characters and I found myself frustrated with their choices. Having said that, the writing was fine, hence the 3 stars.

I've heard this called a great love story by many people but I don't agree that it is a love story. To me it's a story of obsession, bad choices and enormous grief. The grief parts were realistic but I didn't care about Heathcliff or Catherine. I also found the fact that the story was being told in retrospect by the housekeeper to be annoying.
