Moș Goriot este un roman clasic și după cum spune și titlul, în centrul acțiunii cărții se găsește Goriot, un bătrân de 69 de ani care se lăsase de negoț și se mutase la pensiunea doamnei Vauquer. Gândiți-vă că așa zisele pensiune de atunci nu se comparau cu cele de acum, iar unii oameni trăiau închiriind întreaga locuință unor străini pentru o anumită sumă lunară sau săptămânală.

OK I'm switching translations. I was reading Père Goriot translated by Henry Reed (published by Signet). Now I'm reading Pere Goriot translated by Ellen Marriage (published by Barnes & Noble). Ellen Marriage's translation is livelier, more French-seeming, and more entertaining. I don't know which translation is more accurate, just which one I like better to read.

Here's an example (around page 60 in both editions):

Henry Reed:
"'Sir,' said the footman, 'madame is in her room, and is very busy.'"

This was a depressing read, but I liked the way it gives us a slice of that time period's life. It's a book that makes one think without necessarily being written to rub people's noses in it. What a sad and interesting time of life for the French people. ...more
