I fully admit to having skimmed through some of the poetic passages, but this is an impressive work all the same. I love how the past and present threads were woven together, and as a devotee to all things Victorian, this novel was irresistible.

Two stories unfolding over old letters and in archives and libraries is going to be a story for me. Both stories were interesting and fascinating and also gave a sense of the incredible competitiveness of academia. The only reason I'm not giving this book 5 stars is because there was just too much poetry for me. I was excited for this book. I'd heard good things, and I love epistolary novels---and epistolary novels with romance, and poets, and academics, all written in elegant prose!
Well, the prose is sometimes quite pretty, but this is really a tedious book. I frankly do not care about either of the main characters. They're boring, at best, and caricatures at worst---quite uncompelling. Neither love story is exactly compelling, either. Although the book is rife with de ...more
