One of the greatest and most harrowing adventure stories of all time. There are a number of books on Shackleton and the Endurance, several of which I've read, but I like Lansing's book the best. Not only is this the best-written account, it also gives the best insight into Shackleton's character and the leadership skills that played such a vital part in this story of survival.

One of the all-time classics, and for good reason. The story of Shackleton's voyage is eternally fascinating. However, this account leaves out some of the details in Caroline Alexander's recounting of the voyage. Alexander's book is loaded with photographs and, indeed, the story of how those photographs survived. Alexander's book is the better choice, especially for someone who is new to the Shackleton story.
