Wow, this book was dark. I've seen the movies and from those conjured up a story that had this dreamy quality of submerged attraction and envy--plus elegant old houses. But Brideshead Revisited the novel took me to a very dark and disturbing place. At first glance this may seem such a simple and tedious story but the more I think about it the more I love it. It touches so many themes : repressed or non-repressed homosexuality, the effect of religion, the lives of the rich and the privileged, alcoholism, family ties etc. It begins with innocence and ends with losing it. It's a bit slow in the beginning, very interesting in the middle, and a bit rushed ending at the end. I love the story of the friendship between Sebastian and Charles, but a bit disappointed when the story went to another direction. The discussion about religion, especially Catholic, is pretty interesting although a bit excessive in some parts. I also love the setting - Brideshead seemed like a wonderful, gothic house that is perfect for reminiscing. ...more

I really enjoyed this book although it is certainly a tragedy in the end. However it embodies everything I love about British literature and tells a wonderfully vivid story. It's interesting too because I don't really find Charles Ryder particularly likable, yet I still feel a deep sense of sadness for him.
