What Members Thought

I had never heard of Elizabeth Gaskell, before last year when I started reading the 1001 list of books "you must read before you die". I saw that Judi Dench was in a production of Cranford and that is what made me read this before the 2 other books on the list.
Although Cranford is not my favorite Victorian Novel (I would say Jane Eyre, Great Expectations and Doctor Thorne would vie for that title), I did enjoy this book, and I want to read more of her work.

Because this is a series of vignettes due to originally being published as a series in a magazine, the flow comes off as neighborhood gossip and too much importance on saying the right words so as not to reveal your true circumstances. So not my style. But the ladies watch out for one another and kindness prevails, so there is a place in my heart for Cranford and its inhabitants. On the 1,001 books to read before you die list and one of the more enjoyable ones I have selected from that list.
